Vertex, M100

This is a hand-drawn graphite pencil artwork by Sophie Scott Lewis, created as a tribute to one of Britain’s most iconic military timepieces — the Vertex M100. This graphite drawing was commissioned by Vertex Watches for their Mayfair showroom and celebrates the rebirth of the brand’s historic Calibre 59, one of the original “Dirty Dozen” wristwatches designed for British soldiers during World War II.

The artwork captures the M100’s timeless balance of utility and refinement — from its clean, modern case lines to its deep black dial and luminous Arabic numerals. Every element was drawn entirely in graphite pencil, using no white ink, with subtle tonal layering to recreate the watch’s soft reflections and textures. The result is a photorealistic rendering that highlights both the precision of British watchmaking and the craftsmanship behind fine graphite art.

To reflect the human story behind the design, the composition features a hand holding the watch — a personal touch inspired by the artist’s own family history. Sophie’s brother posed for the piece as a nod to their grandfather’s WWII service, symbolising endurance, memory, and the passage of time. This emotional layer connects the M100’s military heritage with contemporary artistry, bridging generations through pencil and paper.

The Vertex M100 graphite drawing stands as more than a watch portrait; it’s a reflection on heritage, craftsmanship, and the stories objects carry. Through careful attention to tone, texture, and light, Sophie pays homage to both the Vertex legacy and the enduring beauty of handmade art.
